Living up to our name for your best outcomes, experience with advanced Vatech CBCT scan technology
Our dental practice is “advanced” in more than just name. The Advanced Dental team, led by Drs. Chitra Tiruveedula and Joseph C. Yang embody the latest and greatest innovations in dentistry science and technology. From our office in Aliso Viejo, California, we offer a vast range of investments in technology to benefit our patients, including the Vatech CBCT scan system.
What is Vatech CBCT?
Vatech is the brand name for a category of diagnostic/imaging technologies or systems known as “cone beam computed tomography,” or CBCT.
How is CBCT different from a “regular” CT scan?
While cone beam computed tomography is equipped to produce similar images to conventional computed tomography (CT) scans, it is a variation on its better-known counterpart. CBCT systems feature an arm that rotates around you 360 degrees. Data about the teeth, mouth, jaws, neck, ears, nose, and throat are captured from multiple different angles using a cone-shaped X-ray beam. A large volume of high-quality images from varied perspectives can be rendered with a single scan for a more complete understanding of the nature of your or a loved one’s condition.
A Safe and Effective Experience with CBCT Scans
New scientific and technological advancements have made dentistry much easier and smoother over the years. Advanced Dental is at the forefront of these developments and has invested in most of these tools and technologies, including Vatech cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. These scans are used in a variety of dental applications and have been tested to be safe and effective, emitting 10 times less radiation dose/exposure than conventional CT scans.

Do I have to “prepare” for my scan?
No! The process from start to finish should be very simple and hassle-free. In fact, such scans are easily incorporated into routine checkups, and Drs Tiruveedula and Yang notice something potentially problematic when evaluating your mouth (and they need to take a closer look). There is little to no special preparation associated with this noninvasive diagnostic tool. As with other types of x-rays, you will want to tell your dentist if you are or may be pregnant.
What can I expect during the process?
You will be asked to sit still as the system makes its rotation. You won’t sit for long because CBCT is efficient; a full x-ray of the entire mouth and dental structures can be scanned in 20 to 40 seconds. A regional scan to collect information about a specific area of the mouth or structure can take less than 10 seconds. After the multiple images of your mouth are captured from various angles, a single 3-dimensional digital reconstruction is created. This provides our doctors with a comprehensive picture of your oral and craniofacial health, which aids in accurate diagnoses and precise and effective treatment and monitoring.
How do you use these scans?
Some of CBCT’s many uses include:
- Orthodontic treatment planning
- Diagnosing TMJ disorders, cavities, and more
- Planning for implants and other surgeries
- Detecting and “staging” tumors
- Evaluating bone structure and teeth orientation
Is it safe (due to radiation concerns)?
We respect that patients may be concerned about radiation exposure during the diagnostic process. However, our doctors have selectively scrutinized all technologies and techniques at Advanced Dental for their safety and effectiveness. Furthermore, CBCT scans are associated with 10 times less radiation dose/exposure than conventional CT scans.

CBCT Scan FAQs
How is CBCT different from X-rays?
Traditional dental X-rays capture two-dimensional images. They only show flat images of your teeth, roots, and surrounding bone. CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is more detailed than a conventional X-ray. It creates highly detailed 3D views of your teeth, jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and surrounding structures. This level of detail allows dentists to evaluate your oral health from multiple angles with greater precision.
Should I be worried about radiation from the Vatech CBCT?
No! CBCT scans are safe. They use low-dose imaging technology to minimize radiation exposure, significantly less than traditional CT scanners. The amount is considered low and safe for diagnostic use when medically necessary.
What’s a CBCT scan used for?
We recommend CBCT scanning when additional detail is important for precise diagnosis or treatment planning. CBCT scanning may be used for several reasons, including:
- Diagnosis: They help detect fractures, cavities, and other abnormalities that may not be detected with conventional imaging.
- Implant surgery: 3D images help determine the precise location to place your titanium post.
- TMJ disorder diagnosis: CBCT scans capture detailed images of the jaw joints and muscles, helping detect abnormalities.
- Orthodontics: Advanced imaging shows the position of your teeth and underlying jawbone to plan your orthodontic treatment.
- Extractions: 3D scans provide the level of detail needed to administer extractions precisely and safely.
- Endodontic treatment: Vatech CBCT technology helps visualize your root canal system for precise treatment.
CBCT is an innovative medical imaging modality that provides dentists with an unmatched level of detail for enhanced diagnostics and treatment planning.
Are CBCT scans mandatory?
No. CBCT scans are not required for every patient or procedure. Your dentist will only recommend one if we need additional detail that cannot be clearly provided with traditional imaging. For procedures such as dental implants or complex oral surgery, CBCT scans can significantly improve treatment precision and planning.
How long does CBCT scanning take?
The scan is surprisingly quick and comfortable. A full scan takes less than a minute. During the scan, you stand or sit still while the machine rotates around your head to capture detailed images. It takes about 5 minutes for the computer to construct your 3D image. This fast turnaround speeds decision-making, whether it’s diagnosing or planning your treatment.
Does CBCT scanning make my treatment more costly?
CBCT imaging may slightly increase diagnostic costs, but it often improves treatment accuracy and helps prevent complications or unexpected issues later. In many cases, the detailed information provided by CBCT technology enables safer, more efficient treatment planning. Advanced technology provides fantastic value for your investment.
