Benefit from the expertise of our in-house periodontist regarding specialty care for gum disease

At Advanced Dental, we recognize that you have thousands of dentists to choose from in the greater Aliso Viejo, California, area. However, not all general dental offices have the onsite expertise of a board-certified periodontist, like our own Dr. Joseph C. Yang. Your gums are in very good hands with our considerable in-house capabilities and knowledge.

What is the role of a periodontist?

When people think of dentists, they often focus on white, straight teeth. Yet, dentistry is about protecting and sustaining the health of the many parts that contribute to attractive teeth and a beautiful, balanced smile. Periodontists like Dr. Yang have advanced training and experience with diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions of the periodontium – the tissues and structures that support your teeth in the jaw. These tissues include the gums that surround the teeth and the jawbone.

What does a periodontist treat?

Gum disease (or periodontal disease) is one of the most common health conditions and a leading cause of tooth loss. It affects nearly one out of two American adults. With our dentists’ specialized care, periodontal disease is preventable, and its effects may even be reversed when detected and treated proactively and promptly.

How do I prevent gum disease?

There are many risk factors for gum disease and tooth decay. Notably, a failure to consistently brush or floss away food particles can increase your risk of plaque build-up. Plaque is a destructive bacterial film. It gradually eats away the attachments between the teeth and gums. We work with you to foster good oral care habits at home. Home hygiene must be complemented by regular visits to our office for professional cleanings that remove what toothbrushes cannot – stubborn plaque build-up or tartar. Recommendations for care and professional preventive services are tailored to your needs.

How do you treat gum disease?

Treatments depend on how the disease has affected or damaged your gums. Periodontal disease is a progressive condition. Early-stage disease is marked by inflammation. It may be treated, and its effects may be reversed with special rinses or medications, changes to oral care at home, and professional cleanings. The later-stage disease may be treated with nonsurgical “deep cleaning” (scaling and root planing), or if greater damage has occurred, the gums may be healed and tissues regenerated with surgical intervention.

Does surgery hurt?

No treatment at Advanced Dental should ever cause additional pain. Plus, due to our dentists’ use of the latest technologies, we have eliminated many concerns associated with earlier-generation periodontal therapy. For instance, we can eradicate bacteria, remove diseased tissue, and encourage healthy reattachment of the gums to the teeth with lasers. The laser never touches the gums for a painless process and precisely treats the areas that need it most. It provides a well-tolerated alternative to conventional surgeries and techniques that use scalpels and cutting to treat diseased tissues.

Bring out the best in your gums and smile in comfort. Call (949) 289-9993 to schedule your appointment at our office in Aliso Viejo, CA. Do not wait for potential trouble signs with your gums (like puffiness or bleeding) to arise before you contact us. The best treatment is no treatment at all. So, ideally, we want to see you when your gums are healthy – so we can keep them that way!
