What are panoramic dental X-rays?

Panoramic dental X-rays are often recommended for our patients without recent or previous full-mouth X-rays, as they provide a detailed view of all teeth and their positioning. They might also be used for other purposes, such as planning orthodontic treatment, evaluating impacted wisdom teeth, detecting jaw tumors or cysts, and assessing oral health.
How is a panoramic dental X-ray taken?
During the panoramic dental x-ray process, patients stand in front of the machine with their chin resting on a small platform. The machine rotates around the head, taking images of the entire mouth in one pass. Patients must remain still and bite on a special attachment to ensure proper positioning.
Are panoramic X-rays considered safe?
Yes, panoramic dental x-rays are considered safe for most patients. Because they are digital, they use less radiation than traditional X-rays, and they only need to be taken once every five years or as your dental team recommends at Advanced Dental.
Can anyone get a panoramic X-ray?
In general, most patients can undergo panoramic X-rays. However, pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions may not be eligible for this type of imaging. Your dental team will talk to you before you have x-rays done to ensure they are appropriate for you and your needs.

Dr. Joseph C. Yang has over 30 years of dental practice experience. He earned his B.S. from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and his D.D.S. from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He then had a distinguished 30-year career as a U.S. Naval Dental Officer, including a residency in Periodontology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Dr. Yang is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a member of the American Dental Association and American Academy of Periodontology. As a board-certified Periodontist, he has performed thousands of successful periodontal and implant procedures. He is also a renowned lecturer and trainer in the latest implant and periodontal techniques worldwide.
