What Is a Crown?

A crown is a synthetic cap that fits over your existing tooth, going all the way down to the gum line. It's typically used to restore the appearance and function of a tooth following a restorative procedure or if a tooth has significant decay or damage. We design our Aliso Viejo crowns to fit with your natural teeth in every way possible.

Crowns may be used to:

  • Prevent a weak tooth from fracturing or decaying
  • Protect a tooth that's particularly sensitive
  • Restore the natural appearance of a severely discolored, stained, or misshapen tooth
  • Cover a cracked, weakened, or broken tooth
  • Restore a tooth that has been treated with root canal therapy
  • Provide anchors for bridges
  • Complete a dental implant restoration
  • Enhance dental aesthetics

Once in place, a crown looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

Dental Crown Materials

Crowns can be made from several different materials. At Advanced Dental Aliso Viejo, we offer porcelain and zirconia crowns. The best materials to use will depend on the position of your affected tooth and your unique oral health needs. We will carefully assess your dental situation to determine which of our solutions is right for you.

Porcelain Crowns: Porcelain crowns provide the most natural look. They are made to match your surrounding teeth in size, shape, and color in a way unsurpassed by any other type of crown. The goal in the creation of porcelain crowns is to mimic the lustrous, glistening quality of your natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are ideal for front teeth restorations. And because they're biocompatible, they're a good option for patients with metal allergies.

Zirconia Crowns: Zirconium combines the aesthetics of porcelain crowns and the strength of metal crowns. High translucent and layered zirconia crowns have increased in popularity over the years. Our Zirconia crowns are visually appealing, resistant to chipping, biocompatible, and smoothly surfaced to reduce the accumulation of plaque. Zirconia crowns are easy to shape and color match to resemble your natural teeth.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge is a special dental appliance that spans the gap made by one or more missing teeth. The dental piece is affixed to the teeth on either side of the gap, filling the gap. A bridge can be held in place by anchoring them to crowns, clasps, or dental implants. Our dentist will sit down with you to review which option is best for your situation.

Dental bridges can be used to:

  • Readjust your bite
  • Restore the ability to chew
  • Restore your smile
  • Restore your pronunciation and speech
  • Prevent gum diseases and jaw conditions
  • Prevent your remaining teeth from moving out of place
  • Maintain the shape of your face by preventing facial muscles from atrophying

Types of Dental Bridges

A typical bridge consists of pontics, the false teeth that fill in the gap, and abutment teeth, which anchor the pontics on either side of the gap. Unlike dentures, dental bridges are fixed and can only be removed by a dentist.

The main types of bridges are:

Traditional Fixed Bridge: A conventional or traditional dental bridge has a filler tooth and two or more crowns that are all connected. The bridge is not connected to the gum itself.

Cantilever Bridge: While similar to a traditional bridge, the pontic in this bridge type connects to only one abutment tooth.

Maryland Dental Bridge: This bridge is ideal if you have missing front teeth. The dental bridge uses a metal or porcelain framework, which is bonded onto the abutment teeth.

Implant-supported Dental Bridge: This bridge type uses dental implants instead of frameworks or crowns. A titanium post is surgically inserted into the jawbone to hold the bridge in position.

What Can You Expect When Receiving a Crown or Bridge?

dental bridges mission viejoYou'll need two to three appointments for the full installation of bridges or crowns at our Aliso Viejo office. During your first visit, our team will perform an exam and work with you to determine the best option to meet your needs. If you're getting a crown, our dentist prepares the tooth that is going to receive the crown. If you're getting a bridge, our dentist will reduce the adjacent teeth in size so that the crown or bridge fits properly and securely.

A mold will be taken out of the treatment area and sent to a local dental lab for fabrication. You will wear a temporary crown or bridge while you wait for the permanent one to arrive from the lab. After the lab creates your crown or bridge, you'll come back to the office to have it permanently cemented in place.
