Complete oral and maxillofacial surgical care at the dentist’s office that you know and trust

Advanced Dental lives up to its name. We provide many capabilities in-house. So, we rarely have to refer you to other specialists’ offices. Our team includes the highly skilled Dr. Chitra Tiruveedula, a talented dentist, and Dr. Joseph C. Yang, a board-certified periodontist. This combination of expertise and advanced technologies enables us to perform some of the most complex oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures right from our office in Aliso Viejo, California.

What is oral and maxillofacial surgery?

This is an entire category or branch of dentistry. So, it is not limited to any single type of treatment, service, or procedure. Generally, “surgery” refers to repairing deficiencies or treating conditions by cutting, accessing, or modifying tissues and structures of the body. “Oral” refers to the oral cavity or mouth, and “maxillofacial” refers to the jaws and face. In turn, the surgeries that we perform are focused on restoring the health, function, and appearance of the mouth, jaws, and face.

What are some examples of oral/maxillofacial surgery?

There are many. Surgical techniques may be used when a tooth is severely decayed or fractured and cannot be removed through a simple extraction. Or, when a wisdom tooth “gets stuck” in the jaw or is impacted, surgical extraction is needed to remove it, relieve pain, and prevent further complications. Dental implants can be surgically placed and secured in the jawbone to replace any essential lost teeth. And, when your gums are the issue, we may recommend surgical periodontal therapies to remove diseased tissue and rebuild these structural supports for the teeth.

Will surgery hurt?

No treatment at Advanced Dental should ever cause undue pain. We use exacting anesthetic techniques and relaxing sedation methods as needed. You won’t feel any sensations of dental instruments, and many common sources of dental anxiety have also been eliminated or minimized with the use of advanced technologies such as laser dentistry.

So, do dental implants require surgery?

Yes. However, the surgery is generally straightforward and completed in the office. We simply introduce these “artificial tooth roots” to the jawbone. Once they have been placed, the healing process begins. The implants must heal or join to the rest of the bone. So, implants can then provide a solid foundation for the replacement teeth attached to them later in the process. Additional surgical procedures may be necessary to build up naturally lost bone when teeth are not replaced promptly.

What are some of those “additional surgical procedures”?

Bone may need to be grafted or transferred from one part of the mouth and placed or secured to the part that has sustained bone loss, or that could use the build-up the most. Grafting may also involve the use of synthetic materials or other donor sources. We can even use grafts to build up deteriorated gums among those patients who have lost supportive tissues in the jaw due to advanced gum disease.

Why should I trust your office in Aliso Viejo, California?

We have the capabilities in-house to perform even the most sophisticated procedures. However, we also take a highly proactive, partnership-based approach. We know that many of these procedures can be avoided entirely with consistently good preventative care. So, we encourage you to contact us right away if it’s been a while since you have seen a dentist. Call (949) 289-9993 to schedule your checkup today. We also welcome your specific questions.
