Implants are an excellent choice for replacing lost teeth and restoring your smile’s function and aesthetics. The thought of implant surgery, however, can be intimidating. Dental anxiety or fear of pain can also hold people back from getting implant treatment. At Advanced Dental in Aliso Viejo, California, we resolve these issues with sedation dentistry. The following FAQs compiled by Dr. Chithra Tiruveedula and our team offer greater insight into the role dental sedation plays in implant treatment.
Dental sedation is medication that helps you relax for dental treatments. When it comes to implant surgery, you have a choice of three types of sedatives, in addition to anesthesia, to keep you comfortable for this treatment. These are nitrous oxide, conscious sedation, and IV sedation.
Getting implants involves surgery. The implants are placed inside your jawbone to function like artificial tooth roots. This entails making an incision in your gum to gain access to your jawbone, drilling a small hole in the bone, and inserting the implants. Afterward, we’ll suture your gum closed so it can heal.
The surgery is done using local anesthesia, so you feel no discomfort or pain. In addition to anesthesia, we can add dental sedation to keep you calm, relaxed, and still for your surgical procedure.
If you’re just mildly nervous, nitrous oxide may suffice. It’s a gas you breathe through a mask over your nose. This gas makes you feel lightheaded, which takes away anxiety and fear.
Conscious sedation is a pill you take about an hour before your surgery. It puts you in a “twilight” state, semi-conscious but still awake.
IV sedation is the strongest. It’s administered through your bloodstream and produces complete relaxation. Patients often fall asleep.
Your choice of sedation will depend a great deal on your level of anxiety, the duration and complexity of your implant treatment, and your personal preference. Dr. Chithra can discuss these options with you and guide you in your decision. Your current state of health, medical history, and medications you’re taking will be considered before sedation is used.
If you’re using dental sedation for your procedure, the general rule of thumb is to avoid drinking or eating 6 to 8 hours before your procedure. If only local anesthesia is used, you can eat a light meal a few hours before your surgery. Choose foods that are easy to digest to avoid the risk of an upset stomach right before your treatment.
Alcohol and caffeinated drinks should be avoided 24 hours before implant surgery as they can interfere with the anesthesia and recovery. Dr. Chithra will give you a list of pre-surgery guidelines to help you prepare for your treatment.
