What is an intraoral camera?
“Intra” and “oral” refer to “inside” and “mouth,” respectively. So, these cameras are designed to capture images of the inside of the mouth. They do so gently and non-invasively; Drs Chitra Tiruveedula or Joseph C. Yang simply place a small, pen-like device or wand inside the mouth. They then pass the wand/pen over the tissues and structures. As the handheld device scans, the built-in camera captures very clear and detailed images. These images can be pulled up on a monitor and viewed with you, the patient, in real-time. Plus, such imaging is not static. It is dynamic. As areas are scanned, you can see video of your teeth and other structures as they appear in the moment.

Digital radiography is different from intraoral cameras in that it produces images of the insides of the teeth and below the gum tissue. Intraoral cameras, however, provide insights into the surface of each tooth with colorful, real-time video. We like to say that this is cutting-edge video imagery at its best! Does it hurt?
No technology at our office should “hurt.” Intraoral camera technology is designed to be simple and fast. The wand and process do not produce any pain. There is also no special preparation required.
