Zeroing in on digital radiographs to support a safe experience, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatment
We are “advanced” in more than just name. Led by Drs. Chitra Tiruveedula and Joseph C. Yang, Advanced Dental of Aliso Viejo, California, uses state-of-the-art therapeutic technologies and cutting-edge diagnostic tools, including digital radiographs or digital dental x-rays.
Zeroing in on X-rays
Visual examinations are limited. There is only so much that can be seen unaided, with just the human eyes alone. For this reason, dentists like Drs. Tiruveedula and Yang use X-ray technologies or radiography to create images of what the eyes cannot see. Clear pictures of hard-to-see or very small areas of the mouth and associated structures support a precise diagnosis. With the correct diagnosis, we can recommend treatments that work to resolve pain and other symptoms in the short term, as well as the underlying source of such symptoms over the long run.

“Why” choose digital X-rays
Every technology at our office has been carefully selected for its effectiveness, safety, and comfort. There are many advantages associated with digital vs. conventional film-based X-rays.
These include:
- Minimal radiation exposure – With digital X-rays, the patient’s exposure to radiation is significantly lower when compared to traditional X-rays. In fact, it’s estimated that digital radiography emits ~ 80% less radiation on average than film radiographs.
- Instant gratification results — With traditional X-rays, film had to be developed to render the images, which can take several minutes. With digital X-rays, the images are immediately available for analysis and viewing on a computer monitor.
- Enhanced images—Digital radiographs provide clear and detailed images that can be magnified and enhanced to support an accurate diagnosis, which is essential to effective treatment. To effectively treat, we must accurately understand the source of your symptoms/condition.
- A sustainable solution – Digital X-rays are not only patient-friendly but also planet-friendly! There is no need for the chemicals that are used to develop traditional x-ray films. So, it is a more sustainable and environmentally conscious alternative.
- Smart and secure storage and retrieval—Digital images can be saved on our computers and linked with a patient’s electronic file to make them easy to store and access for later use.
Digital Radiographs FAQs
What are digital radiographs? How are they different from older dental X-rays?
Digital radiographs are dental images captured using electronic sensors instead of traditional film. The images appear instantly on a computer screen rather than needing chemical processing. This modern approach allows dentists to view, enlarge, and adjust images for better clarity, helping identify issues that may not be visible during a standard visual exam.
Why do digital radiographs expose patients to less radiation?
Digital imaging systems require significantly less radiation to capture clear diagnostic images. As the sensors are more sensitive than film, they need less exposure time. This reduction makes digital radiographs a safer option for routine monitoring while still providing the detailed information dentists need to evaluate oral health accurately.
How do digital radiographs help dentists detect problems earlier?
Many dental concerns develop beneath the surface of the teeth or gums. Digital radiographs allow dentists to spot early signs of decay, infection, or bone changes before symptoms appear. Enhanced image detail supports earlier intervention, which often means simpler treatment and better long-term outcomes for patients.
What happens when digital radiographs are taken during a dental visit?
The process is quick and comfortable. A small sensor is placed in the mouth while images are captured in seconds. There’s no waiting period for development, and most patients can view the images immediately. No special preparation or recovery time is needed after the images are taken.
Are digital radiographs considered an eco-friendly option?
Yes. Digital radiographs eliminate the need for film, chemical developers, and physical storage materials. Images are stored electronically, reducing waste and environmental impact. This technology aligns with more sustainable dental practices while maintaining high standards of diagnostic accuracy and patient care.
How are digital radiograph images stored and protected?
Images are securely saved within a patient’s electronic dental record, allowing easy access for future visits or treatment planning. Advanced security systems protect patient privacy while ensuring records remain available for long-term monitoring. This digital access also supports efficient communication between dental team members.
Will I feel anything while digital radiographs are being taken?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort. The sensors are designed to be compact and smooth, making the process easier than traditional film X-rays. The entire procedure usually takes just a few minutes and is often completed as part of a routine dental exam.
How often are digital radiographs needed for dental care?
The frequency depends on individual oral health needs, age, and risk factors. Some patients require images annually, while others may need them less often. Dentists recommend radiographs only when necessary to monitor changes or evaluate concerns, ensuring responsible and minimal exposure.
Are digital radiographs useful for treatment planning?
Yes. Clear, high-resolution images help dentists plan treatments more precisely, whether addressing cavities, evaluating bone structure, or monitoring previous dental work. This accuracy allows for more predictable care and helps patients better understand their treatment options through visual explanations.
