We make flaws in the smile disappear like magic! FAQs about bonding, a one-visit wonder for cosmetic repair

An overly pointy tooth that you have hated for as long as you can remember. A gap between two teeth that has, over many years, become a more pronounced feature of your face and smile. These and many other cosmetic imperfections can be eliminated to support an attractively balanced smile in just one visit to the office of Advanced Dental in Aliso Viejo, California.

What is this “magic”?

Though the transformations may seem that way, they are not magic, as they can be dramatic and quick. Dental bonding is the reason so many of our patients feel pride again and are able to smile and laugh without holding back. They are no longer embarrassed by the look of chips, gaps, cracks, uneven spaces, resistant dark stains and discoloration, and poorly shaped (and poorly sized) teeth.

How do you eliminate these concerns with bonding?

Bonding is a procedure that involves preparing a dental material (composite resin), which can then be applied to replace the damaged tooth enamel. Once bonded or secured to the flawed teeth, the resin covers the chips, excess spaces, and other concerns to make them disappear!

Bonding – the solution to multiple dental issues

If you try to hide your smile due to chips, gaps, cracks, uneven spaces, dark stains and discoloration, and poorly shaped and sized teeth, there’s no need to do that anymore. Dental bonding is a solution for all that!

In fact, it’s a lower-cost, faster, painless (anesthetic-free), conservative, and reversible alternative to veneers. We have enabled many of our patients in Aliso Viejo, CA, to smile and laugh without holding back with our bonding solutions.

Can bonding “fix” all flawed teeth?

Bonding is a good option for many patients, but like all procedures, it is not for everyone. For starters, your teeth and gums must be healthy. Also, the composite is secured to the fronts of the teeth, so it is appropriate for “imperfect” front teeth that show when you smile.

What can I expect from my visit?

Well, since the process is not invasive as the material is just placed on top of the teeth (and no enamel is removed), there is no need for local anesthetic. You don’t have to be numbed because the process is not painful. Dr. Chitra applies the composite resin, which she has perfectly color-matched and prepared as a pliable, putty-like substance. This pliability allows her to adjust the resin in a way that covers up the imperfections naturally. She can even add more resin to increase the height of a worn-down tooth or to recontour a tooth that may be irregularly shaped. The material is lastly hardened and secured with a special curing light.

Dental Bonding FAQs

What can dental bonding do for my smile?

A lot. Dental bonding is a quick way to upgrade your smile. It can enhance your smile in several ways, including:

  • Whiten your stained teeth
  • Close small gaps between teeth
  • Repair chips and cracks
  • Resize or reshape uneven teeth
  • Address dark triangles (open gingival embrasures)

Dental bonding shows how minor enhancements can create a significant impact. Applying tooth-colored resin subtly refines your smile, resulting in a more confident, natural look.

Will my teeth look natural?

Yes. Composite resin is available in several shades. Your dentist chooses the shade that closely matches your natural smile. Once applied with an eye for artistry, your bonded teeth blend right in. Most people won’t realize you have dental work done, but they will notice your smile improvement.

Does applying dental bonding hurt?

No. The procedure is quick, comfortable, and non-invasive. After cleaning your tooth, the dentist prepares the surface by applying an etching gel. There is no need for drilling or anesthesia shots. After this minimally invasive tooth preparation, the dentist artfully applies the bonding material and sculpts it to the desired shape and size. Each tooth takes about 30-60 minutes, meaning you’ll be done in one appointment.

Is dental bonding reversible?

In many cases, yes. Bonding involves minimal changes to your natural tooth. That means it can often be adjusted or removed later if your needs change. It’s a flexible option for enhancing your smile without committing to permanent procedures.

Can I whiten my bonded teeth?

Teeth whitening works wonders on your teeth, but not on dental restorations, such as bonding. That’s because of their non-porous surface. If you are planning to whiten your smile, it’s best to do that before bonding, so everything is matched to the new shade.

What are the alternatives to dental bonding?

You have options. Teeth whitening is an affordable option if color is the only concern. Porcelain veneers offer a more dramatic, long-term solution, although they cost more. We recommend dental crowns if your tooth requires full coverage.

How long does dental bonding last?

With good care, bonding can last 5-8 years or more. Their longevity depends on your habits. Avoid biting hard objects. Maintain good oral hygiene, and visit your Aliso Viejo dentist twice annually for regular check-ups and cleanings.

How much does dental bonding cost in Aliso Viejo, CA?

Several factors affect the cost of dental bonding, including the number of teeth involved and the complexity of the work. A consultation will give you the exact cost.

Does insurance cover dental bonding?

It depends. If bonding is done for restorative reasons, insurance may cover part of the cost. However, cosmetic treatments are usually not covered. Our team will review your coverage and outline the applicable benefits.

How does bonding compare to other cosmetic treatments?

Most commonly, bonding is compared to porcelain veneers. After all, both generally "work" similarly and may be recommended to correct the same flaws. However, bonding largely presents a lower cost, faster, painless (anesthetic-free!), conservative, and reversible alternative to veneers. That said, some patients may prefer veneers because porcelain is known for its ability to replicate the properties of tooth enamel. This makes porcelain veneers a particularly aesthetic, strong, and long-lasting way to make over your smile. Porcelain is also stain-resistant – so there's another plus!
